Rathafandhoo's Mangroves: A Living System Worth Protecting

Tucked within the island of Rathafandhoo lies a dense mangrove forest spanning approximately five hectares — modest in size, yet immense in ecological and cultural value. These coastal wetlands occupy the dynamic space where land meets sea, forming one of the most productive and resilient ecosystems in the Maldives.
Among the dominant species is Bruguiera cylindrica — known locally as Kandoo — a mangrove uniquely adapted to survive in waterlogged, oxygen-poor sediments. Its distinctive knee roots arch above the soil surface, enabling gas exchange in an environment where most plants would suffocate. This structural adaptation is not merely a biological curiosity; it is a functional necessity that sustains the broader ecosystem around it.
What These Forests Do
Mangroves like those on Rathafandhoo deliver a suite of ecological services that far exceed what their modest footprint might suggest.
Above ground, their dense canopies regulate microclimates, moderate surface temperatures, and provide shelter and nursery habitat for both marine and terrestrial species. Below ground, their root systems anchor sediment, reduce coastal erosion, and improve water quality by trapping pollutants and fine particulates before they reach the reef.
Perhaps most significantly in the context of climate change, mangroves are powerful blue carbon sinks. Over time, they accumulate and store large quantities of organic carbon within their soils — carbon that has been quietly building, layer by layer, for years and often decades. At low tide on Rathafandhoo, the exposed mangrove substrate makes this process visible: dark, carbon-rich sediment that represents years of natural climate mitigation. Disturbing these soils — through development, dredging, or land reclamation — releases that stored carbon back into the atmosphere, reversing what the forest has spent generations building.
A Cultural Lifeline, Not Just a Habitat
Beyond their ecological function, Rathafandhoo's mangroves carry deep cultural significance. The young fruit of Bruguiera cylindrica — called Kandoo in the local language — has historically served as a source of food during times of scarcity. In moments when food security was precarious, island communities turned to this forest for sustenance.

That dual role — as both ecological infrastructure and cultural safety net — reveals something important: environmental health and human resilience are not separate concerns. They have always been the same concern.
The Threats Are Real
Despite their value, mangrove ecosystems remain under threat across the Maldives and globally. Land reclamation, waste disposal, unsustainable harvesting, and unplanned coastal development can degrade or permanently damage these environments. Mangroves recover slowly, and their ecological dynamics are complex. Once lost, they are not easily — and sometimes not at all — restored.
The consequences extend beyond biodiversity. A degraded mangrove system means weaker coastal protection, less carbon storage, diminished water quality, and the erosion of the knowledge systems and food traditions bound up with these places.
Conservation Is Not Optional
Protecting Rathafandhoo's mangroves requires more than goodwill — it requires deliberate, multi-layered action. That means enforcing land-use regulations, supporting community stewardship, and integrating traditional ecological knowledge into formal conservation planning. It means raising public awareness about what these forests actually do, and ensuring that restoration initiatives — where needed — are guided by ecological principles rather than short-term visual outcomes.

In a rapidly changing climate, small island systems like those in the Maldives are on the frontlines of environmental vulnerability. Mangroves offer a natural line of defense: buffering storm surges, sequestering carbon, sustaining livelihoods, and holding coastlines in place.
Preserving these ecosystems is not simply about protecting biodiversity. It is about safeguarding the future of island communities — communities whose survival has long been intertwined with the forests that line their shores.
Rathafandhoo's mangroves stand as a reminder: resilience is rooted in the systems we choose to protect.
